Kraszna-Krausz Foundation
New Book Grants

About the Grants

The aim of this grant scheme is to support artists, practitioners and writers who are at an early stage in their career. It recognises the very challenging landscape in which students and recent graduates hoping to establish careers in the fields of photography and the moving image find themselves.

The Kraszna-Krausz Foundation is a UK-based charity which runs annual prizes for books of or about photography and the moving image. 2025 marks the fortieth anniversary of the KKF Book Awards. Reestablishing the Foundation’s grant-giving strand is part of a wider programme of activity which aims to nurture and celebrate excellence in photographic and moving image publishing.

The Foundation has worked in collaboration with the London College of Communication to offer the inaugural New Book Grants to two of its students or recent graduates.

The Grants

The Kraszna-Krausz Foundation is offering two grants of £3,000 each, across two categories, Photography and Moving Image.

The grants are intended to support two graduates, one from an MA or postgraduate level Photography course and one from an MA or postgraduate level Screen School course, both at London College of Communication. The funding will enable the successful applicants  to each realise a publication within 12 months of receiving the first instalment of the grant.

The Awardees will receive two instalments of £1,500; the first when they are selected and the second upon delivery of their Publication.

What type of project is the award for?

  • The grant is intended to support the production of a new publication.
  • The Publication can take physical or digital form.
  • It can be intended for wide or limited distribution, or be a unique, one-off object or project, but there must be an intention that it will be publicly shared, accessed or displayed.
  • The Publication may be developed from a new project or a project that is already underway or that forms part of further postgraduate study.
  • The grant will be used at the Awardees’ discretion to realise their proposed Publication or to support a specific area of research as part of a larger project, such as funding necessary travel, enabling access to specialist archives, or image or film licensing.
  • It is expected that the grant will enable the realisation of the proposed project within 12 months of the money being received, rather than just fund the research or development process.
  • The grant cannot be used simply to pay a publisher to publish a book.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Have graduated from either an MA or postgraduate level Photography or Screen School course at LCC within the last two years or be in the process of completing an MA or postgraduate level Photography course or an MA or postgraduate level Screen School course at LCC.
  • Have submitted the relevant application materials by the deadline.
  • Applications are welcome from individuals or groups.

How to apply

Applicants are asked to submit a portfolio to the relevant Programme Directors at UAL.

  • A case for why the Publication will make a valuable contribution and/or add knowledge to their field of study or area of practice.
  • A budget showing the total cost of producing the Publication. If the total cost exceeds the value of the grant then detail of how the balance will be raised.
  • Pages 4–10: Visual material and/or text that relates to the proposed Publication. This could be examples of the visual content for an image-based publication or samples of written work if this is a text-based publication.

The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2026.

Outcomes and expectations

  • Realisation of the proposed publication. The projects should be completed within 12 months of the first instalment of the grant being awarded.
  • Where there is more than one copy/version of the publication available, a copy will be given to the Foundation for its archive. If the publication is a unique object, KKF will be provided with photographs or relevant documentation by the awardee.
  • The completed publications may be exhibited at KKF events and displays. We will be in touch on a case-by-case basis to organise this, and will keep the awardees updated with any plans to show the work. We will invite the awardees to participate at in-person events as far as possible.
  • A representative from the Foundation will be in touch at points through the year to ask how the project is developing and to plan potential displays.
  • The publications may be featured of the KKF website and/or social media platforms (the awardees will always be fully credited).
  • We will ask the awardees tou to submit a short, written evaluation outlining how the Gift has enabled or supported the publication, and to complete a questionnaire prepared by KKF.
  • We will ask the awardees to acknowledge KKF’s support where appropriate and to supply quotes, image and film assets (as applicable) and a bio to be used for promotional purposes.

How will submissions be judged?

The Awardees will be selected by two selection panels, one focused on Photography and one on Moving Image. Each panel will consist of three judges and will include a LCC course leader, a representative from the Foundation and a leading expert in the field of photography or the moving image. The judges will be announced in the new year.

The eventual mode or means of communication doesn’t need to be finalised at the point of application, though the feasibility of delivery of a proposed project will be considered by the jurors.

Applicants will be notified by email as to whether they have been selected after the judging has taken place in the Spring of 2026.
